The way we work with our clients is holistic – we understand that people who do not have a safe place to live, or enough food to survive cannot focus on legal proceedings. Many who walk through our doors have been exposed to traumatic events and find it difficult to speak about their experiences. This is why our Justice Centre Legal Services Team works alongside our Social Welfare and Counselling Team, to ensure people who are seeking asylum in Hong Kong are supported to achieve social and mental well-being before and while engaging with lawyers to secure protection and justice.
Our Social Welfare Team supports refugees and disadvantaged migrants to access social welfare, including food, clothing, shelter, healthcare and education. This often involves supporting clients to overcome logistical hurdles, and navigate a complex system. Within the limited support provided by the government, the basic needs of our clients often go unmet. Our Justice Centre Social Welfare team works in partnership with other NGOs as well as private organisations to address the gaps in provision.
Our inhouse psychotherapist provides counseling services to support vulnerable migrants overcome trauma and other mental effects of persecution, torture and displacement. We work with mental health professionals in Hong Kong to help vulnerable migrants access long term support where needed.
