Justice Centre would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to our pro bono partner Dr. Sarah Borwein for her decade-long pro bono service to Justice Centre clients and the community of asylum seekers and refugees in Hong Kong.
Dr. Borwein was born into a family of academics but she found her calling for medicine after obtaining her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees. Since then, her medical practice transcended geographical boundaries as she practised in Canada and Beijing before coming to Hong Kong.
Over the past 13 years, she has seen how even an advanced healthcare system like ours in Hong Kong could at times fail those in the most desperate need of both legal protection and medical attention due to misunderstanding, miscommunication or simply a lack of trust between patients and doctors, in addition to language and cultural barriers. Trauma leads to not only physical scars but also psychological ones, as Dr. Borwein has observed, and these scars often further hinder survivors’ access to assistance and rehabilitation.
Dr. Borwein’s amazing work and her passion are indeed inspirations for both our team and the wider community dedicated to supporting the brave survivors of human rights violations seeking international protection in Hong Kong.
We are extremely grateful for her support of our work and we are honoured to be joined by our pro bono partners like Dr. Borwein in driving change for a fair and just society in Hong Kong. Learn more about our
